I must say this trek started off with a lot of grumbling by me. All those who had promised to come for this trek with me, ditched me at the last moment, hence i was compelled to go with the only person left, Mohit. I had hoped of him to be a good company/experience but he was so not. But anyway i will continue with my other experiences and not dwell on this matter.
It was a cold December night when we started off from Delhi. Having booked a 2nd class ticket to Pathankot we were trying to make this trip economical. What we didn't realize was, winter requires 2-3 blankets in 2nd class compartment and we were just in our 3 layers of woolens and jackets. By morning both of us were frozen solid. I could not feel my feet and no amount of rubbing would get them to warm up. There were a lot of defense personnels in the same compartment who offered advices and blankets to warm us up. My heartiest thanks to them.
Arriving at Pathankot we headed to the Air-force station to meetup with a few of my friends before moving towards Dalhousie. We met up with Pooja and Kapil and had a lovely lunch with them. Then in the evening we decided to move off to Dalhousie for our rendezvous. The drive from Pahankot to Dalhousie is all of 2.5hrs. Dalhousie was chilly yet there was no sigh of snow that we had been anticipating.
We registered ourselves at the base camp and went up to our respective rooms in the YHA hostel. Freshened up and went down for dinner. After dinner there was a party arranged for the 31st night but i was too tired to attend it and really needed my sleep. Hence my new year's eve was spend sleeping. Next morning we were woken up for the acclimatization walk which was of some 8kms. It was a nice refreshing walk which allowed us to interact with the other people in the group. After this trek we had the rest of the day off to finish packing and preparing for the next day of trekking.
The 1st day of the trek was flagged off at 9am and was a trek of 6hr to Kala-top. It was a beautiful route through the jungles with a lot of steep climbs. But the beauty of it all made it worth the effort. We arrived at the Kala-top accommodation at 3pm and after a brief rest and tea headed off to see the view from the highest point in the region. It was another hours climb but the sunset from this place is one of the most beautiful that i have seen. After sunset we went back to the hostel for hot soup and dinner.
Each night after dinner a campfire session was held, wherein people sang songs or told jokes n stories or played games. This form of entertainment was a much needed form of interaction for us.
Next morning we were woken up at 5am for morning tea and were greeted with the good news of the impending snowfall. Our joy was boundless as we received the 1st snowfall of the season a couple of hours later. Catching snowflakes on my tongue was one thing that I've always wanted to do. After a nice breakfast we had to move off towards our next destination- Khajjiar. At 8am we started off. On the way we experienced 1st snowfall and then rains. The route to Khajjiar was one of the most difficult ones. There was a steep descent followed by a steep ascent. By the time we approached Khajjiar it was raining heavily. As we entered our hostel, the heavy rains had turned into heavy snowfall. The beauty of it was breathtaking. Within the hour, everything was covered in white. And the chill that followed later was too much to let us have a good nights sleep. With the lack of any kind of heating instrument around, we had even tried to keep ourselves by the flame of a candle.
The next morning we went down to the lake where the view was stunning. A think fog cover was hanging over the lake and everything around the lake was white. The 1st rays of the sun kissed the mountain tops to make exquisite scene. After lots of photography here we went back to a nice hot breakfast.
We then started off to our next destination Chamba. Chamba is at a much lower altitude than Khajjiar, hence we had to do a lot of steep descending. There was no climbing involved this time and as we went lower it got warmer. The route to Chamba was one of the longest, and once we got out of the jungles it was just a long walk on the winding highway with the sun breathing down our necks. As we dragged ourselves to our hostel in Chamba we were making plans to move off to Dalhousie the same evening as unofficially the trek was over. Hence on arriving at Chamba we decided to make a group and hire a vehicle to get down to Pathankot.
At first we took the ride to Dalhousie to collect our left over stuff and certificates before moving to Pathankot. The drive to Pathankot was another scary experience. After just 1/2 hr or travel we suddenly flooded with a thick cover of fog. The visibility had turned to nil and maneuvering the vehicle on the ghats at night was like trekking blindfolded. We almost went over the cliff twice as we cud not see the bend ahead. After 3 harrowing hours we finally got out of the ghats and the fog and reached back to the Air-force station.
Tired we settled in our respective rooms to have a hot water bath after 4 days. The water felt great and all we wanted to do was drift off to a peaceful sleep on a soft bed with a warm blanket.
One more reference to tounge ~ earlier tasting wind, this time the snow :) I hope you can mention the why's rather then the what too.. I mean what compelled you to go to Dalhousie and what compelled you to go to Kalatop,Khajjaiar etc. Nyway good you're back to blogging. Hope we can have some more treks togather soon. Do let me know your upcoming plans. Specially if you are planning any winter/offbeat destination like this one or Ladak or something.
ReplyDeleteMoiz
Hey Moiz..
ReplyDeleteWell the Dalhousie trek is a winter trek orgnaised by the Youth Hostels Association of India and they have preplanned destinations for treks. This one was a 5 day trek..they have others that last for 12-15days too...in the Himalayas in full snow.
My next offbeat destination in gonna be North East... lesse when i can do dat :)
Well aim also planing Dalhousie trek in this Dec.
ReplyDelete1. What type of accommodations they provide in each camp (Dalhousie, Kalatop, Khajjiar, Chamba/Mangala)?
2. Can you please let me know is mobile connectivity available in all camps?
3. What is the best time to go for winter trek to enjoy the snowfall?
Thanks, Saash
Hello Saash,
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for the late reply
1) Well the acco at some of the guest houses that they hire. They are not really the greatest acco u wud have seen but they will get you through the night.
2)Mobile connectivity is great at all camps, coz we dont go too far from civilization.
3)The best time to go wud be late dec and early jan... coz last yr their snowall arrived late.

my reporting date is on dec 24..
ReplyDeletecan some one give me tips for the trekk...
@ Anonymous
ReplyDeleteWell winter wud have set in by 24th although im sure if it would have snowed or not. Nonetheless please carry warm clothing, layering is the best bet. Although while trekking you will feel hot but make sure you do not rip off all layers coz of it. Remove the topmost 1-2 layers at max.
There is a good chance that it will rain. So please dont forget to carry ur raincoat/windcheater etc and lots of spare socks. Also ur clothes once wet will refuse to dry, hence adequate change of clothes necessary. All this is mind carry only as much as u can carry on ur back while trekking.
If you are carrying ur camera, make sure u carry spare batteries too, and carry the batteries in some inside pocket close to ur skin. Batteries drain out very quickly in the cold, hence they need to be kept warm. We witnessed a lot of moisture and humidity, hence make sure you take good care that u are well prepared to keep ur cam dry.
None of the camp sites will give you a heater or anything else to keep u warm. Hence carry a few candles and a match box to warm out those frozen fingers n toes :). Else you can fill ur bottle wid hot water and use is as a hotwater bag to keep u warm. Thats wot i did. :P
And lastly pray super hard that it snows ;) its the best thing in the world out there. Dont miss the sunset at kalatop and the sunrise at Khajjiar.
Cheerz and enjoy your trek, Its an awesome trek
Anupama
thanks anupama..thankyou very much
ReplyDeletewhat about the type of shoes should we wear...and will they provide ruck sacks...
ReplyDeletewear trekking shoes.. "ACTION trekking" are the best... they do provide ruck sacks but its better if u carry ur own as their's are not the most comfortable ones
ReplyDeleteHi Anupama hw r u dng....
ReplyDeleteMy trip is on 1st jan 2011...jus waiting for it..
can u tell me is der ne provision to keep our luggag or else v hav 2 carry al our clothes n stuff in ruck sack al d 5 days....
Hello Pankaj,
ReplyDeleteI am doing great.
Well if u are carrying extra stuff that u wud like to leave behind than u can do so only at the 1st base camp.. i.e. the one at dalhousie and come back to collect it once the whole trek is over.
But then u will have to carry all the stuff that u are going to require for the 5days in ur rucksack.
Regards
Anupama
thnx a lot..i thnk i will cary al d stuff in ma ruck sack...
ReplyDeletewat al should i carry???
I have answered that question above for anonymous.. please refer
ReplyDeletehey good suggestions and info, me too reporting on 24th , actually im studying photography , so i would like to know do we get chance to charge batteries , most of my stufff is camera related so i need power source so can u help out ,.. thanks
ReplyDelete@ Anonymous...
ReplyDeletewell charging points are available at all hostels but it would be better if u carry an extra charged battery with you too. As it is going to be extremely cold there your batteries will discharge out quickly. Hence keep extra batteries with you and keep them in a warm place - like your trouser pockets or the inside pocket of ur jacket so that they keep warm from ur body heat.
U can charge ur batteries only at nights when you reach at the hostels after ur trek.
Pack silica gels with all ur camera equipment so as to avoid moisture accumulation. Ur lens tend to get foggy due to temp variations. And always have a towel handy with your cam incase it rains or snows. Dont forget to carry an umbrella with you.
Hope this information helps

great n thanks anupama...yea ill follow these n thanks again.. are there any water falls or rivers , lakes around just curious to know. .
ReplyDeleteWell there is a lake at Khajjiar, which is the 2nd stop after Dalhousie. But at this time of the year it will be close to frozen. Also during the acclimatisation trek on day-1, you will find a small water reservoir which wud be completely frozen. I threw a big rock in it and it still didnt go through, just made a spider-web crack in the ice.
ReplyDeleteKalatop just has mountain views and Chamba has no interesting views. On the way from Kalatop to Khajjiar you may find some small water streams. Waterfalls and rivers are difficult to find as its cold and the snow isn,t melting.
hey thanks and good to here that and every thing was usefull and will let you know after the trip and my trains on 22nd from hyderabad and wish the other one too to meet in dalhousie...thanks again anupama n hf , tc
ReplyDeletehi anupama, thanks for this information. i am going to join trek on 25/12/2010.
ReplyDeletethis is my first trek to this region. any suggestion from your side. one more thing i am going alone.
ajay
Hey ajay,
ReplyDeleteDont worry at all abt being alone... u will make a lot of new frds there from a lot of diff places... you are afterall going to be spending 5days with your group.. i was almost alone too and yet i had an awesome time.
About other suggestions abt going there i think i have pretty much covered everything in the above comments, kindly refer them nah... im just too lazy to type them out again :P
If you are joining on 25th then you will surely have some Christmas celebrations happening :)so you have something more to look forward to.
It is going to be really cold at nights... even the sleeping bags dont keep u warm much... check if there are any alternate things available in the market to help u wid that, coz they dont provide heaters/ sigdi etc.
Dats all i guess.. rest all i have mentioned in my comments above.
Enjoi ur trek Ajay... you will have a good time im sure. :)

ReplyDeleteHi Anupamam,
ReplyDeleteIs this blog still active !!??
My trek is scheduled on 22nd Dec,2012 and we are leaving from Bangalore.
DO you have any Idea on which airport is near to the place ?
If we take flight to Jammu, will we get bus from Jammu to DalHousie ?
Thanks,
Arun Karanth
Hi Arun,
DeleteYup this blog is pretty must active... i made a new post a couple of weeks back. :)
Coming back to your query...
You can definately fly to Jammu, but im not sure if there is a direct bus from Jammu to Dalhousie but im assuming there definately should be one since Dalhousie is pretty closeby.
But otherwise you could take a train/bus from Jammu to Pathankot and then a bus/cab from there to Dalhousie.
I am from Mumbai so i had flown down to Delhi and taken the overnight train to Pathankot as i was meeting a couple of frds there, and then had taken a cab to Dalhousie.
A bus from pathankot takes around 5hrs and a cab around half the time.
There is also a flight from delhi to pathankot but i dont know how good the frequency.
Alternately you could also fly down to amritsar and take a bus from there, would be more or less the same distance as Jammu to Dalhousie.
Hope this helps

Hi,
ReplyDeleteI planning for this trek, but I'll be reaching the base camp 2 days earlier. Any suggestions as to what I can do those 2 days ?
Thanks
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI would like to know if they make you jog/exercise in the mornings ? If so do you need to carry an extra pair of sports shoes in addition to the trekking shoes that one obviously needs ?
Thanks
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI guess this is the last of my series of questions, does this trek get over by the 5th day ? I plan to catch the train at 11 am on the 6th day itself to return to my home from Chakki Bunk, is it possible to reach chakki bunk on the 6th day itself by 11 am ? From your blog it seems possible but just wanted a clarification from you. Also at what time did you guys reach the Hostel at Chamba ( I think they have changed the route and the last point is Mangla ) I would like to move out from Mangla the same day I reach it and head for Chakki Bunk. Can you please give me a fair idea of the feasabilty of my plan ?
Thanks again,
Saurav
Hi,
ReplyDeleteCan you give some idea whether we can book a return ticket from Chakki bank / Pathankot on the last day of the trek? What time the group disburses after the trek?
I have applied for this year's Dalhousie trek and would like to plan my return journey well in advance.
Would appreciate your inputs in this regards.
Thanks in advance
